We left West End, Tortola yesterday headed to Salt Island. Straight into the wind and current, we motored the whole way. The 12 mile trip took about 5 and a half hours. We had anchored in on the lee side of the island and have a calmer anchorage than we had in several days. Very pretty evening, dark night lots of stars.
We got up early this morning to see about exploring Salt Island. I didn’t have the right shoes to do the land hike – to rocky and uneven for flip-flops. Nicole was goat girl again and climbed the rock walls to take a look at a few caves that were on the side of the island. She was rewarded with a fine collection of shells to bring home.
My snorkel here was mostly a grassy bottom with few fish but a fine hermit crab in a large conch shell was in a big hurry to get somewhere.
We later motored around the point to tie up at the wreck of the RMS Rhone. Interesting snorkel over the stern of the ship. A nice turtle seemed to be the resident docent. Nicole saw the propeller, that I missed and Tim found a couple large lobsters in residence.
We are now headed back to Tortola, East End this time, to provision.
