Bran Castle…this is the image I associate with the Dracula movies as the Dracula castle. But no… it turns out that of all the places we’ve gone this week, this is one with no actual connection to Vlad. He is known to have passed through the Bran Gorge but the castle was built to protect German colonists in Transylvania.
We spent the morning checking out Sighisoara in the daylight, quite a different experience than the graveyard at night. A pretty and colorful fortified town with battlements and needle spires.
We later left for Brasov. On the way, we stopped to visit the Prejmer Fortress. This was a fortified church built by Teutonic knights in the 13th century.
The next stop was Bran Castle. Recently a royal residence and now a museum it is perched on a rocky bluff above the town of Bran.
This evening we arrived in Brasov. Lots of red-roofed buildings, a large Gothic style Black Church and a beautiful square that is the heart of the medieval town.
We had dinner at a restaurant/bar that had live local musicians singing pop and country songs in English with strong Romanian accents. Weird and wonderful.
