You know it.s coming but you’re not sure just when.  One more turn in the siq and there it is. The first startling moment you turn a corner and see Petra’s Treasury appear is breathtaking.

The Siq, the mile long main entrance to the city, is a natural ravine lined with towering rock walls.

When you set out you begin to see carved stone structures. The further into the canyon you go the more carvings you see, niches with idols and the remnants of the clay water pipes that delivered water to the city.  The siq seems to funnel you down through the twists and turns of the canyon just as it might water after a sudden storm.

It’s about a 40 minute walk from the entrance down into the siq that leads to the reveal of the Treasury. There are any more tombs and even a theatre carved into the limestone.  Everything here is much larger than I expected.  The rock seems so fragile but so far has lasted two thousand years.
